When you need an experienced professional to tackle your next Grand Rapids painting project, look no further than the experts at Bylsma Painting. For over 40 years, Bylsma’s full-service painting company has served Grand Rapids and West Michigan well — delivering quality painting, staining and wall repair for residential and commercial clients throughout the area.
A Grand Rapids native born in 1951, owner Rick Bylsma brings over 40 years of painting skill and expertise to every residential or commercial painting job his company handles.
A high school and college athlete who lettered in football, basketball and tennis in high school, Bylsma went on to earn a tennis scholarship from Grand Valley State University. After painting throughout high school and college, Bylsma decided to paint full time in 1972, trading in his tennis racket for brushes, rollers and ladders.
Bylsma credits much of his success to studying under several great mentors in the industry. He has been very fortunate to learn the tricks of the trade from some of the best teachers in the area.
“My great-grandfather, who was trained by his father, came here as a house painter. He trained my grandpa —who built the business —and my father, who handed down the knowledge of generations to me,” explained Bylsma.
In additional, Bylsma was fortunate to work with Frank Ryskamp, owner the oldest paint store in West Michigan; Barbara Roelofs, the state representative for the National Trust for the Preservation of America; Linda DeJong, one of the founders of Heritage Hill; and Roger Moss, PhD., of the Philadelphia Athenaeum Museum.
Bylsma and his wife of 35 years, Sue (DeHaan), have two sons and a daughter, and have been members of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1982. Both remain active in their community, volunteering for numerous activities including Little League, church events and local fundraising for school and youth groups.
